About
Asier Edeso Egia is a Basque choreographer, educator, and performance artist. His choreographic work has been performed internationally in countries such as Spain, Monaco, France, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, and Brazil.
As a dancer, he has worked for renowned companies such as Scottish Ballet, Ballet du Rhin and Les Ballets de Monte Carlo performing pieces by William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Mats Ek, Marco Goecke, Johan Inger, Jean Christophe Maillot, Olivier Dubois, Marie Chouinard, Goyo Montero, Natalia Horecna, Ashley Page, Jo Strømgren, among others.
His work as a choreographer questions the molds that define identity, how we relate and interact with our environment, the patterns of behavior and their repetition. To do so, Asier combines dance with other languages such as theater and audiovisual to project his artistic vision.
His language originates in the understanding of the nervous system, using different tools acquired throughout his training, based on the Feldenkrais method.
Asier's choreographic work begins in 2018 with "Ersatz", performed as part of Jeunes Chorégraphes de Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. The piece questions the torrent of thought that defines who we are and dives into fragmented identity, regression, and insecurity.
A more introspective piece will be his next creation "Besetzung", also premiered at the Jeunes Chorégraphes de Les Ballets de Monte Carlo festival, where he questions the validity of memories, the feelings of joy and pain they generate in us, and how we construct our memory.
His next creation "(D)i(n)stinto Animal" explores to what extent we have moved away from what we call "Instinct" and what differentiates us from the rest of the animal kingdom.
In 2023 he created "The Choice" touring the three main cities of the Czech Republic, a piece about the prism through which we observe reality depending on our past; and "Deliberate Mistake" for Ballet d'Jerri (UK) where he collaborated with artist Julia Makeyeva to investigate the art of weaving and its implications on the island of Jersey.
Work with Museums and Educational programmes
Asier Edeso Egia combines his choreographic work with teaching. In 2021, he assumed the artistic direction of the educational unit of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. This project is promoted by a collaboration agreement between the company, different higher schools of plastic and performing arts in Monaco and France, and the “Direction de l'Education Nationale de la Jeunesse et des Sports de Monaco (SOGEDA)”. Within this program, he develops his pedagogical facet, giving workshops with teachers in the educational field, creating shows and developing Masterclasses where dance and interpretation are taught to unexperienced audiences.
In addition, from 2018, and in tandem with the Japanese dancer and choreographer Mimoza Koike, Asier collaborates in a partnership with the Marc Chagall Museum in Nice, offering a repertoire of performative pieces including other artists. Following this path, he has designed performances in other spaces such as the Matisse Museum (Nice), the Hauser and Wirth Gallery (Monaco), or "Le 109" Contemporary Culture Center (Nice).
